Class Descriptions
Anusara Yoga (following your heart, flowing with grace) is a uniquely integrated approach to Hatha Yoga developed by master yogi John Friend. It embraces the art of the human spirit and powerfully blends this with the science of biomechanics. Anusara Yoga is an exceptional yoga system that integrates the celebration of the heart, universal principles of alignment, (energy loops and spirals) and balanced energetic action into the performance of asanas.
Yoga Fundamentals
This 5-week course intriduced basic asanas (poses), breath exercises, and philosophy to those who are new to Anusara yoga in a supportive, fun atmosphere.Yoga 1
This class is designed to introduce students to Anusara’s Universal Principles of Alignment and energy loops and spirals. The emphasis will be on standing poses, while introducing the basic genres of yoga postures, including beginning backbends, hip-openers, and supine poses. Students will leave feeling more confident and grounded in their bodies as they work to systematically stretch and strengthen their hamstrings, hips, backs, and shoulders. This level is appropriate for students without any prior yoga experience, and for students new to Anusara.
Yoga 1.5
This class creates a bridge between Yoga 1 and Yoga 1-2 classes. It begins where level 1 leaves off by exploring the Universal Principles of Alignment in greater detail and introducing a wider range of standing poses, hip openers, backbends, handbalances, and beginning inversions. This level is appropriate for students who have some general yoga experience or students who wish to move beyond Yoga 1, but are not yet ready for Yoga 1-2 classes.
Yoga 1 - 2
This class encompasses a more vigorous sequence of postures, giving students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Alignment Principles through the practice. Focus will be on further exploration of the standing poses and hip openers while also introducing deeper backbends, handbalances, and inversions. This level is appropriate for students who have some general yoga experience or are in good physical condition.
Yoga 2
An exploration of the advanced standing poses, backbends, inversions, hip openers, and twists, this class is designed to incorporate the alignment principles at a deeper level. Students will challenge themselves in a playful and creative environment as they continue refining their practices. This is the most advanced class offered at Gateway! Students must be able to kick up to handstand by themselves at the wall and do a full backbend with straight arms. Please speak with the teacher before signing up.
